Ahmedabad, 20 January 2011--Cyberoam, a division of Elitecore Technologies and the innovator of identity-based Unified Threat Management (UTM) solutions, today announced the Q4, 2010 Internet threats trend report, prepared in collaboration with its partner, Commtouch. In addition to the report, the security vendor warned of a “Kamasutra” virus attack which is successfully titillating Internet users into downloading a PowerPoint presentation of sexual positions from the Kama Sutra – only to have their PCs infected by the virus.

In several documented attack instances, the virus is being transferred in the form of a downloadable PPT/PPS file link. While clicking on the presentation, users can see some Kama Sutra sexual positions. However, once downloaded, the malicious code simply gives hackers a backdoor access to one’s PC.

Says Abhilash Sonwane, VP-Product Management, Cyberoam, “It is one of the most dangerous attacks in recent times because once the virus infects your computer, it can be very difficult to remove it. Hackers would be then able to access all your personal files, execute any number of unwanted tasks and spy on your online activities. Our advice is: ‘be careful on what you click with the mouse’ and do not download any file from unreliable sources. Also, keep your anti-virus program up-to-date and enabled in real time protection mode.”

The Q4, 2010 Internet threats trend report mentioned an overall drop in global spam levels, down to as much as 74% for December which can be attributed to the recent closure of Spamit, a major organization behind pharmacy emails. However, spam levels ultimately did rise to 83% towards the end of the quarter, which was still 5% down from the levels during Q3, 2010.

In another story, the recent holiday season saw a predictable surge in spam on the topics of Christmas and Thanksgiving. Also, there have also been malware attack instances using phony Hallmark greetings exploiting a range of vulnerabilities in RealPlayer, JAVA, Flash Player and Adobe Reader. India again claimed the top zombie producer title with an increase of 3%.
